This Friday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS for its acronym in English) issued a resolution regarding the incident of Will Smith in the last edition of the Oscar Awards. After a meeting of its board of directors, the AMPAS chose to punish the actor by prohibiting him from attending any event hosted by the organization for the next ten years. This disciplinary action comes days after Smith resigned as a member of the Academy and vowed to abide by any additional sanctions deemed appropriate by AMPAS.
In the recent statement, the AMPAS begins by apologizing for not acting appropriately at the time of Will Smith’s outburst during the last Academy Awards. During the live broadcast, the actor slapped Chris Rock on stage at the Dolby Theater after the comedian made a joke at the expense of his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. «[No estábamos] prepared for something unprecedented”, reads the statement signed by David Rubin Y Dawn Hudsonpresident and CEO of the Academy, respectively (via IndieWire).
“Today, the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, in addition to accepting his resignation,” the statement continues. “The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years beginning April 8, 2022, that Mr. Smith will not be permitted to attend any Academy events or shows, in person or virtually, including, but not limited to, the Academy Awards.”
AMPAS also took the opportunity to deeply thank Chris Rock “for maintaining his composure in extraordinary circumstances.”
“This action we are taking today – in response to Will Smith’s behavior – is a step towards a larger goal of protecting the safety of our artists and guests, and restoring confidence in the Academy,” the text concludes. “We also hope that this can start a time of healing and restoration for everyone involved and impacted.”
On that controversial night, Will Smith won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in the drama king richard. However, due to his behavior during the ceremony, another consequence could be that companies like Netflix, Sony and Apple decide to stop any future projects with Smith.
