Every few years, a film is released that transforms the genre, reinvigorating it and blowing audiences away. One of these assets is certainly The Matrix, and fans were elated to hear that Keanu Reeves, part of the original cast, would be in the sequel, The Matrix Resurrections. Lilly Wachowski recently said why she chose not to participate in this new film’s production.
The Wachowskis have received widespread recognition as a result of their involvement in the Matrix franchise. Since then, they have produced several films. Lilly, however, was not in Resurrections. She shared her reasons for making this decision, saying:
That’s a tough one. I got out of my transition and was just completely exhausted because we had made Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending, and the first season of Sense8 back-to-back-to-back. We were posting one, and prepping the other at the exact same time. So you’re talking about three 100-plus days of shooting for each project, and so, coming out and just being completely exhausted, my world was like, falling apart to some extent even while I was like, you know, cracking out of my egg. So I needed this time away from this industry. I needed to reconnect with myself as an artist and I did that by going back to school and painting and stuff.Lilly Wachowski
It seems Lilly Wachowski is doing something healthy for herself. While this will hurt The Matrix Resurrections, ideally, it will allow the director to establish a healthy work/life balance in the future. It’s mind-boggling to think about how Wachowski has the time to make movies since even researching her timetable is a full-time occupation.
These remarks are all from an interview with EW. Many fans are becoming excited about The Matrix 4, particularly after announcing the film’s title and first footage. Her sister Lana helmed the movie in her stead since the director was struggling with both professional and emotional fatigue.
As Lilly (her sister Lana’s double) has said, both (Lilly and Lana) came out as transgender and transitioned while living out in the open. Being trans is a very emotional experience for anybody, which holds even if you’re not involved with something as big as Sense8. Lilly also told her fans that her choice was influenced by her next movie, The Matrix Resurrections:
[Lana] had come up with this idea for another Matrix movie, and we had this talk, and it was actually — we started talking about it in between [our] dad dying and [our] mom dying, which was like five weeks apart. And there was something about the idea of going backward and being a part of something that I had done before that was expressly unappealing. And, like, I didn’t want to have gone through my transition and gone through this massive upheaval in my life, the sense of loss from my mom and dad, to want to go back to something that I had done before, and sort of [walk] over old paths that I had walked in, felt emotionally unfulfilling, and really the opposite — like I was going to go back and live in these old shoes, in a way. And I didn’t want to do that.Lilly Wachowski
Filmmakers understandably prefer to focus on the future instead of what they’ve already accomplished. It’s no surprise that Lilly Wachowski just wasn’t into The Matrix Revolutions as much since it was only decades after The Matrix and much longer after her gender change. I think we’ll have to wait and see if there’s another sequel commissioned and whether Lilly will change her mind about the franchise she loves.
It is a relief that the video of The Matrix Resurrections appeared at CinemaCon, although details are still a little sketchy. It seems like the upcoming sequel will be a radical departure from the original trilogy, even if the teaser hasn’t been published yet. On the cast, you may expect to see Carrie-Anne Moss and Keanu Reeves.
It is anticipated that The Matrix Resurrections will be released in cinemas on December 22nd. As you prepare for your next trip to the cinema, you may plan the release dates of upcoming movies in 2021.
