David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, promised today told investors on Wall Street that the company will put together a coherent 10-year plan to make the most of future film productions based on DC Comics characters.
The executive’s statement came on the sidelines of Warner Bros. Discovery’s second quarterly earnings report for 2022, just a couple of days after the company was embroiled in major controversy over the surprise decision to can the film. batgirl.
“You look at Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman. Those are brands that are recognized all over the world”, highlighted Zaslav. “We have done a reset. We have restructured the business that we are going to focus on, where there will be a team with a 10-year plan focused only on DC. We believe that this way we can build a much more sustainable business.”
The strategic change to which the boss of Warner alludes is the production of “high quality” films made for the theatrical experience and with a window of exclusivity for the exhibitors, thus moving away from the hybrid model with expensive and direct films for streaming that propelled the pre-merger regime. In that sense, the studio will borrow a page from Kevin Feige’s book in an attempt to emulate the formula that has brought so much success to Marvel Studios.
“It’s very similar to the structure that Alan Horn, Bob Iger and Kevin Feige created very effectively at Disney. We believe we can build a much stronger and sustained growth business with DC. As part of that, we’re going to focus on quality. We are not going to release any film before it is ready (…) DC is something that we believe we can improve and we are focused on that now, ”the executive deepened.
