This is the reason why Lightyear was banned in several countries

It first happened with Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secretsthen with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessand now it’s the turn of Lightyear. A few days before it hits theaters around the world, it is now known that the film starring Chris Evans as the voice of the iconic astronaut will not reach several territories. Here we tell you the countries where Lightyear was banned.

WARNING: This note includes slight spoilers for Lightyear

A few months ago the rumor began that the spin-off of toy story would include LGBT+ characters. Much of the audience received the news badly and there was even talk of forced inclusion. Now that the film has begun to screen for some critics in various countries around the world, it is known that this is a reality.

And not only that, Lightyear will feature the first gay kiss in Pixar history. The scene in question involves a character named Alisha, who forms a family with her partner, another woman, and they greet each other with a kiss on the lips. This was reason enough for Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to decide not to exhibit. Lightyear in their theaters. And obviously, it is due to the LGBT+ content included in the tape.

A few weeks ago it became known that Disney cut the kiss from the tape in the first cut that was shown. Thanks to the protests of the workers, it was decided to reinstate him so as not to generate controversy that could affect not only the performance of the film, but also the image of Disney before the LGBT+ community.

As mentioned above, the most recent installment in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the sequel to Doctor Strange suffered from similar problems. Warner cut six seconds of the first one, all to hide the homosexual relationship between its protagonist and villain, and thus enter Chinese theaters. The second did not reach several territories either, since one of its main characters, América Chávez, is openly part of the community.

So far, China has not banned the premiere of Lightyear. But since the film does not have a confirmed release date in that territory, it is speculated that it will not reach theaters in that country either. If you get one, Disney will most likely have to cut the scene in question.

Do you think that Lightyear deserves to be banned? Will more countries join this measure? The film opens this Thursday in theaters in Mexico and promises to be one of the biggest hits of the summer.

The entry This is the reason why Lightyear was banned in several countries was first published in Cinema PREMIERE.
