The latter have gained vital relevance in the way in which we connect with others, whether it is to establish sincere friendships or find love. However, falling in love through the internet would mean a change in our lives that could take us down the most turbulent paths of love. What is it about?

The documentary directed by Felicity Morris (Don’t Mess With Cats: An Internet Killer) brings together a series of women victims of Simon Leviev,an apparently perfect man, but who only wanted to swindle them. “When I met Simon we had an immediate connection. And then in the middle of the night, he said that he had something to tell me. He said they were threatening him. He needed money. Twenty thousand dollars. Thirty thousand. One hundred and forty thousand”, say the victims.

The real story behind The Tinder scammer

The Netflix documentary has its origins in a special portal report GV titled The Tinder Swindlerwhich exposes the modus operandi by Simon Leviev to steal from several women he met on Tinder.

Who is Simon Leviev?

Simon was born in Bnei Brak, a city in Israel, located on the southern outskirts of Tel Aviv, with the name of Shimon Hayut. However, he changed his name for the purpose of establishing a false father-son relationship with diamond tycoon Lev Leviev.

After fleeing Israel in 2011 for fraud-related crimes when he was just 20 years old, he moved to Finland, where he began his story of Tinder scams to pick up women with false promises. The plan was to convince them that he was a rich heir to establish long-distance romantic relationships and then also convince them that her life was in danger and she needed money. However, Simon was discovered and sentenced to 2 years in prison in 2015 (via).

In 2017, after his release, he was extradited to Israel, but escaped again and returned to Europe to start his criminal pattern all over again. From there he met the NorwegianCecilie Fjellhoythe first protagonist of the documentary.

“He has seduced and swindled young women by the millions and is a fugitive from justice in several countries,” reads the journalistic investigation by Natalie Remøe Hansen, Kristoffer Kumar, Erlend Ofte Arntsen and Tore Kristiansen.

In July 2019, he was arrested in Greece when it was discovered that he was using a false passport and extradited, again, to Israel. Simon denied all the charges against him, but still in December 2019 he was convicted of theft, fraud and forgery of documents. The defendant was sentenced to 15 months in prison, but only served 5 months in prison for good behavior and was later released (via).
