Though profiled for the upcoming awards season, Ridley Scott’s new film couldn’t avoid controversy. Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino and Jared Leto are some of the acclaimed histrionesses who joined a biographical film about the Gucci family and their decline as the regent of one of the most sought-after fashion houses in the world. The theme, the period story, the cast, and Scott’s presence in the director’s chair look like a perfect match for winning multiple Oscars in 2022. However, not exactly favorable comments have emerged about it. The Gucci house, being the filmmaker and designer Tom ford one of those who were not convinced with the tone of the film and with some interpretations.
Tom Ford was (in the 1990s) an emerging couturier who came to revitalize the Gucci brand. After designing several successful products for the company, in 1994 he became its creative director. In fact, he is a minor character in The Gucci house, here played by Reeve Carney (Penny dreadful). On the other hand, let’s also remember that Ford has credits as a filmmaker and is remembered mainly for the shocking film Nocturnal animals, with Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Last week, an essay by Tom Ford on Ridley Scott’s latest tape saw the light, which was published in Air Mail (via). Obviously, the opinion of the Texan artist is relevant because of his relationship with Maurizio Gucci – in the film, played by Adam Driver – and his role in the company, before and after the murder of Maurizio. However, Ford acknowledges that for that very reason there is some bias in what he has to say about The Gucci house.
“I knew many of the other players in this series,” wrote the famed designer. «I was interviewed multiple times for the book that was the source material for the film [House of Gucci, de Sara Gay Forden] so it is difficult for me to divorce reality from the bright and heavily lacquered soap opera that I witnessed on the screen.
And I add:
“The movie is… well, I’m still not quite sure what it is exactly, but somehow I felt like I had been through a hurricane when I left the theater. Was it a sham or a gripping story of greed? I often laughed out loud, but was I supposed to?«

But the laughter turned to deep sadness in the days that followed the viewing of The Gucci house. Ford said that “it was difficult for me to see the humor and the hype in something that was so gory.” He particularly criticized the acting work of Al Pacino (veteran Aldo Gucci) and Jared Leto (his flamboyant son, Paolo) because when they appeared on screen, «I was not completely sure that I was not seeing a version of Saturday night Live of history ». In other words, a true parody of the characters and the unfortunate situation they face.
On the other hand, Tom Ford did defend the role of Adam Driver as Maurizio, since he “offers a subtle and nuanced interpretation.” And while he also perceives a hint of exaggeration in Lady Gaga as Patrizia Gucci (the one who pulled the strings in the adaptation and in real life) he acknowledges that the Oscar winner is “the real star of the movie.”
«His accent occasionally migrates from Milan to Moscow. But who cares? His performance is perfect. His face is something you can’t take your eyes off of«, Specified the couturier. “When on screen, she owns the frame, which is not an easy task with so many experienced and talented cast members vying for our attention. Too many, in fact.
