The Batman: Gotham City Police Spin-Off Series Suspended

“I am revenge” is on everyone’s lips, after the successful launch of the most recent Bat Man movie. The public and critics, for the most part, have fallen in love with the vigilante personified by Robert Pattinson; consequently, the anxious eyes of the cinephile are on the future of the emerging franchise. Not only does it already smell like a sequel, but we have also known about some projects for a long time spinoff for platform streaming HBOMax. However, an announced series that would expand batman finally it will not see the light… at least not in the way it was originally conceived.

The director and co-writer of batman, Matt Reevesspoke on the podcast Happy Sad Confused about that announced series that —as stipulated in the summer of 2020— would deal with “the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City”. Immediately many fans believed that the show would be inspired by comics central gotham (2002-2006), which narrate the work of the Gotham City Police Department in the troubled streets of the city. However, that hypothesis was eventually disproved. And according to recent statements by Reeves, this project spinoff from batman it will not even put uniformed law enforcement officers at its center.

“One thing we won’t do and that I was going to do… There’s the show about the Gotham City police, which has actually been put on hold. We’re not actually going to do that.the filmmaker told Happy Sad Confused (via). “The series was going to be like the prince of the city where Year One takes place, because the movie is Year Two and I wanted it to be the first appearance [de Batman] but it wasn’t going to be a Batman story.”

So, the original plans pointed to a prequel series of batman, where we would see the debut of Bruce Wayne as the caped vigilante, without him being the protagonist. Reeves also spoke about the film the prince of the city —a crime drama directed by Sidney Lumet— as a priority reference. That 1981 film tells the story of an officer from the New York Police Department who decides to expose acts of corruption within the organization. And indeed the suspended series, with Matt Reeves as executive producer, would have walked a similar path.

“It was going to be about this corrupt cop and how the worst gang in Gotham City was the Gotham City Police Department. He would have crossed paths with Gordon [Jeffrey Wright] who would have been someone to measure it with. But it would be a battle for his soul. And I loved this idea! It was super cool for me!”

However, as Reeves suggests, executives at Warners and HBO Max did not like the focus on that corrupt character. Consequently, the spinoff will take a radical turn, no longer to talk about corrupt agents, but about the insane criminals who populate the corridors of an infamous asylum.

In a recent interview with The Cyber Nerds, Matt Reeves stressed that the series on the Gotham City police will no longer be such. Now the plot will be set in Arkham Asylum, with the aim of making him one more character, as much as the decadent Gotham City was in batman.

“That story [del show] has evolved a bit. In fact, we are now more in the realm of exactly what would happen in the world of Arkham.” “It’s like a horror movie or haunted house that is Arkham. [Así como] Gotham is a character in the movie, I really want Arkham to exist as a character. You go into this environment and meet these characters in a way that feels really fresh.”

Are you excited about this new direction for the spinoff? Or would you have preferred the original idea to stick? On the other hand, don’t forget that a solo series about Oswald Cobblepot / Penguin, again played by Colin Farrell, is also in development.

batman It has been exhibited in Mexican theaters since last Wednesday, March 2. Come in here to read the review of Cine PREMIERE.
