The sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is on its way, in order to join the set of films planned for Phase 4 of the MCU. He directs Ryan Coogler again, based on a cast made up of familiar faces, but also some new faces within the franchise. One of them is the Mexican Tenoch Huerta, to whom early reports already assigned an antagonistic role, but only in mid-2021 rumors emerged that he would play the powerful Namor.
Although it is not yet official that the actor is going to give life to that specific character, a recent tweet from the journalist Grace randolph seems to confirm it. It so happens that the popular reporter claims to have witnessed a true image of Huerta in Namor’s shoes, and although she is obviously not allowed to broadcast it, she offers a brief description of what she saw.
I just had a source give me a glimpse of Tenoch Huerta as Namor. The Mayan references are strong and it looks brutal. Very Apocalypto with a jeweled necklace [además de] pearls, goatee and gold bracelets. I can’t wait for Marvel to share it with everyone, ”the previous post reads.
It should be noted that Namor, the Sub-Sailor, originally has no relationship with the Mesoamerican peoples. Since his debut in the comics, more than eighty years ago, this character was raised as the mutant son of a human (Captain Leonard McKenzie) and Princess Fen, daughter of Emperor Thakorr of Atlantis. It seems obvious that precisely this mythical underwater kingdom will be part of the scenes of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever if Namor turns out to be the movie’s villain. On the other hand, sticking to Grace Randolph’s comments, maybe the MCU’s Atlantis has a lot of the ancient Mayan civilization.
In June 2021, while the rumors about Tenoch Huerta as that “Atlantean” began to circulate, it was also reported that Marvel Studios would be looking for two interpreters (man and woman) with South American features of preference to give life to two Mayan warriors. However, others theorized that the casting was actually for Namora and Attuma, two fighters from Marvel’s Atlantis. Interestingly, it was even rumored that Mexican actor Mabel Cadena was cast in the role of Namora (Namor’s cousin) in the sequel to Black panther.
Could it be that the House of Ideas really wants a touch of Mesoamerica in its next film? For now, let the recent tweet refer to Apocalypto —The 2006 American movie about the decline of the Maya — can be a good sign and a bad sign. While its production values are undeniable, Mel Gibson’s film did not escape controversy for its historical inaccuracies.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will hit theaters on November 11, 2022. Its cast is made up of Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Michaela Coel and Dominique Thorne. The sequel is currently in filming.
The entry Tenoch Huerta would look “very Apocalypto” as Namor in Black Panther 2 was first published in Cinema PREMIERE.
