Academy Museum of Motion Pictures devotes lobby to Sydney Poitier

A museum dedicated to the movies will open on September 30. It will honor famed actor Sidney Poitier by allocating 10,000 square feet of its space to him, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Monday.

The Sidney Poitier Grand Lobby came to fruition thanks to Ambassador Nicole Avant and Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, who supported a campaign for the museum’s Board of Trustees Chair and Grammy Awards show producer. The Perenchio Foundation, Tyler Perry, and Oprah Winfrey contributed to the campaign as well. The museum’s patron was created through a collection of donations from Patrick Soon-Shiong and Michele Soon-Shiong. Additionally, the campaign was supported by the Ambassador and co-CEO and Museum Board of Trustees Chair Ted Sarandos, Netflix.

“The principal gathering space of the Academy Museum — a place of solace and quiet that will also be a catalyst for further education and community outreach programs — is to be named in tribute to Sir Sidney Poitier and his stunning creative gifts and monumental good works, which have directly influenced and continue to inspire all of us, even to this day,” said Bill Kramer, the Academy Museum’s director. “Thank you to everyone who was a part of this effort and to Sidney, Joanna, and their family for enabling us to produce this work.”

The tale of Sidney Poitier’s successful connection with the Academy is why his contributions to the film business were immense. Sidney loves the Academy’s acknowledgment of his achievements. Having one’s name on the museum’s entrance serves as a lifetime accomplishment award like a second Oscar.

The Poitier Lobby, whose 24-foot ceilings are created by famed architect Renzo Piano, occupies the entire first floor of the renovated and revived Saban Building, previously known as the May Company building, between the south side of Wilshire Boulevard and the amazing Walt Disney Company Piazza on the north.
