Stranger Things’ Barb Slams Hollywood’s Treatment of Fat Actors

When stranger things debuted its first season on the Netflix platform, one character in particular dazzled the audience just before he perished. Barb, played by Shannon Purser, emerged as one of the few current obese characters who did not engage in any sort of cliché or unnecessary comedy regarding his physique. Reason why the actress now has the tools to criticize Hollywood for the treatment and roles that she always gives to fat actors.

Purser took to social media to comment on the issue after the controversy raised by the trailer for the new version of Matilda. And it is that many people in the networks criticized the fact that Emma Thompson was casted for the character of Tronchatoro. And she placed among a thousand prosthetics and costumes that simulate obesity.

Many conclude that the creators of that film should have hired an actress who was naturally obese for the character. Instead of adapting a histrion to simulate such a physical characteristic. Thus the problem of representation, once again, was put in check by the public. And our dear Barb from stranger thingsalso believes that Hollywood still has a long way to go when it comes to dealing with the industry’s fat actors.

“They’re not hiring fat actors for iconic fat characters because they want a big-name star. But there are almost no big fat stars because fat actors are not allowed to grow up. We are not allowed promotion because the industry sees us as two-dimensional pieces.

The conversation regarding representation has been hot for the last few years. Despite this, there are still many Hollywood products that fail to get the right treatment right. The most recent case is the upcoming Netflix musical based on the Matilda by Roald Dahl. In that one the character of Tronchatoro is iconically obese, big and evil. However, a skinny actress was hired to play the terrible headmistress of a boarding school.

We have recently seen similar cases. For example, in the upcoming biopic on ElvisTom Hanks brings Colonel Parker to life. the budding manager of the singer of Rock And Roll. As with Thompson, Hanks underwent hours of makeup and prosthetics. The icing on the cake is a tailored suit that makes him look obese, just like that personality was in real life.

In the recent version of BatmanColin Farrell looks unrecognizable as the Penguin. The actor sports an impressive transformation, thanks to the magic of makeup, prosthetics and bulky costumes. Even Gary Oldman suffers from the same flaw, in the darkest hours. Where she played British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The film was even awarded the Oscar for Best Actor, as well as the makeup work.

What no one can deny is that behind such iconic characters -including the new Tronchatoro of Matilda– hides an excellent group of actors. In the same way, their choice can be understood due to their high potential to make these characters even more iconic with their talent. However, the line between the above and the much-needed representation within Hollywood is quite thin.
