Director Ridley Scott defended the characterization of Gucci family members in the film live-action recently released. Of course, such production is The Gucci house, where the veteran filmmaker tells the story of that Italian lineage, specifically its decline as the owner of one of the most sought-after fashion brands in the world. The cast is made up of renowned actors and actresses; among them, Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino and Jared Leto. However, regardless of the caliber of those histriones, harsh criticism has arisen where (in part) the casting and the way in which Scott chose to represent the Gucci are questioned.
In a recent interview with Total Film (via), Ridley Scott asserted that he tried “to be as respectful as possible by being as factual as possible” when dealing with characters who are inspired by real-life men and women; in this case, the members of a wealthy family fallen from grace. However, this did not prevent The Gucci house received strong reproaches from the heirs of those people involved in the story that the film reconstructs through fiction.
«People who wrote to us on behalf of the family at first insulted us in an alarming way, saying that Al Pacino did not physically represent Aldo Gucci in any way. And yet frankly, how could they be better represented than by Al Pacino? ”Scott asked.
Interestingly, both Al Pacino and Jared Leto (who in The Gucci house plays Paolo, son of Aldo) have upset more than one for offering performances that – in the opinion of the detractors – fall into exaggeration and parody. Last week, the filmmaker and designer Tom Ford, who in real life lived and had a tense working relationship with Maurizio Gucci, said that every time that Oscar-winning duo appeared in a scene in the film, “I wasn’t entirely sure I wasn’t seeing a version of Saturday night Live of history«.
In fact, several critics have criticized that The Gucci house you can’t decide between being a drama or a comedy. For his part, Ridley Scott acknowledges that his intention was always to erect a kind of satire. Also, in his talk with Total Film, the director advocated the incarnation of Jared Leto, because in his opinion, “the extravagance of Paolo [Gucci] it was very well captured »in the feature film, without becoming something offensive.
“The story, in a funny way, is a satire. And ‘satire’ is really a fancy way of saying it’s a comedy. And I think a lot of that [en la película] is comic. Certainly for the first two acts, ”Scott said.
And I add:
«Not much information about Paolo [Gucci], but there are pictures of Paolo and this is exactly what Paolo looks like. We found the photos and Jared did what he did and dressed like Paolo did. There is not much of Paolo speaking on camera. So that must be, to some extent, imagined. But clearly Paolo was a very colorful and extravagant man.
This same week, a statement signed by the heirs of Aldo Gucci – originally published by an Italian media – began to circulate where it is argued that The Gucci house part of an inaccurate representation of the members of that family.
“The film’s production did not bother to consult the heirs before labeling Aldo Gucci – president of the company for 30 years – and members of the Gucci family as thugs, ignorant and insensitive to the world around them, attributing to the protagonists made, a tone and an attitude that never belonged to them », reads a passage of the statement (via Variety). “This is extremely painful from a human point of view and an insult to the legacy on which the brand is built today.”
