Ridley Scott blames cellphones and millennials for failure of The Last Duel

It is not uncommon in the cinema to see critically battered movies that are blockbusters, while some of those that are endorsed by professionals are ignored at the box office. Such is the case of The last duel, a film starring Matt Damon, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer, which had a regrettable passage through the North American box office. In this regard, its director Ridley Scott regrets the result, but above all he has a lot to say about cell phones and millennials who he blames directly for the poor performance of his film.

Despite the stellar cast and the promise of a script written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, The last duel it was uninteresting for an audience that is still afraid to attend theaters more than necessary. The film had an approximate cost of $ 100 million dollars and to date its collection at the box office has been $ 28.1 million. This is perhaps one of the biggest box office flops of this year.

During an interview on the podcast WTF by Marc Maron, Scott explained why he believes his medieval film may have been uninteresting to audiences. In particular, he referred to the millennial generation, which he pointed out as the probable cause of all the evils.

“I think it all comes down to what we have today, the audiences that were raised on these damn cell phones,” said the director. “Millennials don’t want to be taught anything unless they are told it on a mobile phone.”

The last duel premiered last October with the not inconsiderable promise of seeing the director return to a medieval narrative. The film tells a true event that occurred in fourteenth century France, about a woman (Jodie Comer) who claims to have been sexually assaulted by a gentleman (Adam Driver), close to the king and identified as a friend of her own husband (Matt Damon) .

Honor calls on Damon’s character to find justice against his wife’s attack, although it must be resolved through a duel to the death in which God will be the only one to decide the verdict. The film is fractured into three narratives that tell the point of view of the central trio of characters and this approach has been applauded by critics and the small audience that flocked to theaters to see it.

“It’s a big hit, but I think we’re dealing with it right now with Facebook,” Scott continued. “This is the misdirection that happens when this last generation has been given the wrong kind of confidence, I think.”

Ridley Scott has a chance to end the year with a bang, if at all. House of gucci, the film that will premiere this week, achieves better results in the sale of tickets. We believe that the factor Lady Gaga, Jared Leto, Al Pacino and Adam Driver in the same combo, will be more than enough. Gucci’s house premieres on November 25.

The entry Ridley Scott blames cell phones and millennials for the failure of The Last Duel was first published in Cinema PREMIERE.
