Last weekend, reports emerged that Rachel Zeglerthe main actress of the version West Side Story by Steven Spielberg, did not receive an invitation to the 2022 Oscar ceremony. This sparked criticism on social networks, because although Zegler does not aspire to any statuette, she is the star of a film with seven nominations, including Best Picture.
However, it seems that the body responsible finally chose to amend the path and give the debutant histrion the opportunity to step on the red carpet.
According to IndieWire, Rachel Zegler has finally been invited to present an Oscar category at the upcoming 94th edition of the ceremony. If she accepts, the actress of Colombian descent would join a list of presenters that already boasts names like Lady Gaga, Tiffany Haddish, Woody Harrelson, Daniel Kaluuya and Lily James.
Zegler herself originally revealed in an Instagram post that she would not be attending the 2022 Oscars, after a fan expressed interest in the dress she planned to wear to the event. “I’m not invited, so [vestiré] pants and my boyfriend’s flannel shirt”, replied the actor. Immediately, comments rained down about how absurd and unfair it was that María’s interpreter in West Side Story (Love without barriers) did not receive an invitation.
“I’ve tried everything, but it doesn’t seem to be happening,” Zegler said in the same post. “I will support West Side Story from my sofa and I will be proud of the work we did so tirelessly 3 years ago. I hope some last minute miracle happens and I can celebrate our movie in person, but hey, that’s how it works sometimes. Thanks for all the shock and outrage. I’m disappointed too, but that’s okay. Very proud of our film.”
Well, the last minute miracle happened and we will certainly see Rachel Zegler on stage at the Dolby Theater next Sunday. For it, IndieWire also reports that the filming of the upcoming film live action Snow White, where Zegler plays the titular princess, has been postponed in London to give its star a chance to travel to Los Angeles and attend the Academy Awards. Under the direction of Marc Webb and with Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, this future Disney film does not yet have an official release date.
Later, we will also see Rachel Zegler in the film Shazam! Fury of the Gods, belonging to the DC Extended Universe. This sequel to Shazam! (2019) is directed again by David F. Sandberg and once again features Zachary Levi as the eponymous superhero. Its theatrical release will take place on December 16, 2022, due to recent changes in the Warner Bros. Pictures calendar.
