The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Hollywood announced changes for the 2022 gala in an attempt to regain audience and also make the 94th edition even more agile and entertaining for the public. For this reason, they have decided to leave the following categories off the air:

  • Documentary short film
  • animated short film
  • Edition
  • Short film live action
  • Make up and hairstyle
  • Production design
  • Soundtrack
  • Sound.

In an open letter, the Academy reported the following (via THR):

“In order to provide more time and also opportunities for entertainment […] through comedies, musical numbers, clips and film tributes, there will be a change in the production of the program. The producers of this year’s show and also the Academy […] have made the decision, with the support of officials and the Awards Committee, that each award category must appear on the television broadcast, although eight awards will initially be presented at the Dolby Theater an hour before the live broadcast begins. .

The Academy also specified that the delivery of these eight awards will not be part of the pre-show nor from the red carpet, as some have speculated. Thus, the face-to-face ceremony at the Dolby Theater will begin an hour earlier to present those eight award categories. That is, before the live broadcast begins. In addition, that non-televised segment will be edited to later also present it as a clip audiovisual during the live ceremony.
