Morbius director reacts to criticism: “I’m proud of what I do”

After a very long wait – two years and a pandemic – not all viewers felt rewarded. Perhaps the general public is being more benevolent with the vampire film, as reflected by the 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. On the other hand, the “tomatometer” does not walk with indulgences: the criticisms that come from specialized sites disapprove Morbius with a disastrous 16%, which makes it the worst evaluated film in the Spider-Man universe.

The story, staging, performances and visual effects of Morbius they have been similarly beaten left and right. Without a doubt, we are talking about a new setback for Sony Pictures, which sadly seems to be moving in the opposite direction with regard to improving the quality of its emerging franchise. And although they were not to the liking of critics either, the two films Venom (2018-2021) at least managed to dominate at the box office, something that the film with Jared Leto apparently will not achieve. In its opening weekend, it had to make do with $39 million in domestic grosses.

In any case, the director of Morbius, daniel espinosa, far from being particularly shocked by the negativity surrounding his film. What’s more, he always finds a way to be proud of each title in his filmography, and the one about the living vampire is no exception.

In a recent interview with InsiderEspinosa was faced with the question of how much attention he pays to the unflattering criticism that rains down on Morbius. And the filmmaker of Chilean descent responded with the following anecdote:

«When I made my first feature film, it was a small film called Babylon Disease. I remember one day he was going home on the subway and had a few drinks, so he was a little drunk. Someone nudged me on the train and said, ‘I have to tell you what’s wrong with the second scene of your movie.’ And I said, ‘Well, that’s fine’.”

And I add:

“What I want to say is that it is rare to do something so public. Look, I have a lot of self-hate, so I have a lot of criticism towards my own work. I’m always trying to focus on being better. But I’m also proud of what I do. There are parts in all my films that I’m very proud of.”
