A week after Will Smith’s outburst at the Oscar ceremony, there are people who no longer want to know more about the subject, Michael Bay among them. However, the famous director could not get rid of her so easily, because in recent days he still gave interviews for Ambulance, his latest film about two brothers who become bank robbers and stage a criminal heist on the streets of Los Angeles. And obviously the journalist was curious about what Bay thought of that other blow dealt during the great Hollywood ceremony.
As we all know, the 94th Academy Awards were overshadowed (in part) by an incident involving Will Smith. When comedian Chris Rock got the mic to host the Best Documentary category, he first cracked some jokes at the expense of some of the actor nominees and their partners. However, when joking about the hair of Jada Pinkett Smith – who suffers from alopecia – her husband, Will, got angry, went on stage, slapped Rock in the face and finally yelled at him from her seat with high-sounding words.
Days later, that unfortunate event continued to steal headlines as the story unfolded, with people interested in whether Will Smith—who won his first acting Oscar that night for king richard— would or would not be expelled from the Hollywood Academy. On the other hand, Michael Bay gave his opinion in an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment that it is time to pay attention to the issues that matter greatly.
“For a start [el hecho de la bofetada] It’s wrong, “acknowledged the filmmaker. «But it’s the only thing people are talking about and I don’t really care. Hollywood gets very self-absorbed. There are babies dying in the Ukraine right now. We should be talking about that. So I don’t really care.”
However, Michael Bay shared that having previously worked with Will Smith—on the first two installments of bad boys, from 1995 and 2003—, never believed that the famous actor was the bad boy who reacts with violence. Consequently, his immediate thought was that the slap was a mere setup, devised as part of the show. However, when Smith yelled “Get my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth” at Chris Rock mid-air, Bay realized the hit had been real.
“I’ve never seen him lose his cool like that. I thought it was orchestrated [para el show] because I saw your smile. I’ve been on set when Will jokes around with people,” she added. “Listen, it was a slap, not a punch. He is very good at fighting, he has trained for it. It’s bad to begin with. And then he heard about the scream. He was angry”.

Just last Friday, Will Smith issued a statement reporting having finally resigned as a member of the Hollywood Academy, in addition to accepting any additional sanction from the board of directors. «I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I have a broken heart, “wrote the interpreter (via Variety).
