Conceiving one of the most acclaimed action films by the public and critics of the last decade, of course, could not have been easy, and boy, those involved in front of and behind the cameras know it very well. In 2020 a report by New York Times uncovered the rivalries, tensions and inclemencies experienced during the filming of the film directed by George Miller. Two years later, the quarrels within the production echo again and reveal a strong clash between Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy on the set of Mad Max: Fury Road.
the carrier Vanity Fair compiled the most unheard of testimonies from the production team behind Mad Max: Fury Road that are deposited in the book Blood, Sweat and Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Roadfrom Kyle Buchanan. Although each line can be as inconceivable as it is deceitful, the reality is that it is not and they reveal the professionalism that we as viewers obtained by enjoying the final product.
To date, it remains unclear what were the causes that gave rise to such a hostile environment during the filming of the film. However, the lack of understanding towards the director’s vision and the lack of empathy among the actors could have been the key to hitting rock bottom…
“The story is about self-preservation: if it is to your advantage to kill another character then you should do it and don’t think twice. I think that was reflected in the actors,” said George Miller.
How was the experience of the actors and the crew working with Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy?
“It was very interesting sitting in a truck for four months with Tom and Charlize, who have completely different approaches to their craft”revealed actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.
“Sometimes there was a tense atmosphere. It was like you were on your summer vacation and the adults in the front of the car were arguing.”Nicholas Hoult revealed.
“You’re right, they were like two dads in the front of the car. We were fighting or we were ignoring each other, I don’t know which is worse, and they had to deal with it. It was horrible! We shouldn’t have done that; we should have been better»confessed Charlize Theron, who took part of the blame.
“I don’t want to make excuses for bad behavior, but it was a tough shoot. Now, I have a very clear perspective of what happened. I don’t think I had that clarity when we were making the movie. I was in survival mode. I was really scared.”added the South African-American actress.

The explosive fight between Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy on the set of Mad Max: Fury Road
The embarrassing anecdotes gave way to the testimony of Mark Goellnichtcinematographer of Mad Max: Fury Roadwho revealed the lack of commitment on the part of Tom Hardywhich unleashed the fury of his female co-star:
“I vividly remember the day. The call on the set was at eight. Charlize arrived right at eight o’clock, she sat on the War Rig, knowing that Tom was never going to be there at eight even though she made a special request for him to be on time. He was known for never being on time in the morning. If the time of the call was in the morning, forget it: she didn’t show up. Nine o’clock arrives, still no Tom. ‘Charlize, do you want to get out of the War Rig and walk around, or do you want to…?’ ‘No, I’m going to stay here.’ She really wanted to make the point. She didn’t go to the bathroom, she didn’t do anything. She just sat on the War Rig.”
The prolonged delay of Tom Hardy overwhelmed the patience of the interpreter of Furiosa, who, intoxicated by anger, greatly insulted the British actor. After the attack of anger, the actress felt helpless and in danger, so she requested protection:
“Eleven o’clock. She’s in the War Rig now, sitting there in her makeup and a full costume for three hours. Tom shows up and casually walks through the desert. She jumps off the War Rig and starts cursing at him, saying ‘Fine the fucking idiot a hundred thousand dollars for every minute he’s stopped this team’ and ‘You’re so disrespectful!’. She was right. She yelled at him. But there was a lot of noise, a lot of wind, he may have heard some of that because he went right up to her and said, ‘What did you tell me?’ He was quite aggressive. She really felt threatened and that was the turning point for her, because she then said, ‘I want someone for protection.’ Then she had a producer who was assigned to be with her all the time.”
“In hindsight, the pressure on the two of us was overwhelming at times. What she needed was a better partner, perhaps more experienced. I’d like to think that now that I’m older and uglier, I could rise to the occasions,” Tom Hardy opined.
Despite the bad times, the crew He also highlighted the good times. Especially the one in which Tom Hardy applauded Charlize Theron’s acting work in a key scene of the film.
“People have written a lot of bad things about Tom and Charlize’s relationship. It was just two people trying to do the best job possible.«, Finished Chris O’Hara, second assistant director of the film.
