The Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards nominations remind us of the approaching awards season. Of course, The power of the dog by Jane Campion and Belfast by Kenneth Branagh are titles with enormous possibilities of obtaining an infinite number of statuettes. However, what will happen, for example, with Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings, being this a film that enchanted the public and the critics? What more would I like Kevin Feige, boss of Marvel Studios, that that MCU film gets several awards, but he knows that awards such as the Oscar sadly do not tend to revere the superhero genre.
In an interview with The Hollywood ReporterFeige referred to that “gender bias” suffered by the Hollywood Academy. That bias, among other things, would have led to thirteen years ago The knight of the night Christopher Nolan did not compete in the Best Picture category. Eventually, Black Panther of the Marvel Cinematic Universe became the very first superhero film to receive a nomination in that shortlist. And although it did not triumph, it did obtain statuettes for Best Costume, Best Soundtrack and Best Production Design.
«I think we are always at a deficit because of the Marvel logo and because of a gender bias that certainly exists.. I loved that, for a shining moment, with Black Panther that was put aside and the work was recognized for the achievement that it was«, Commented Kevin Feige in relation to the delivery of the Oscar of 2019.
There are currently expectations that Shang-chi I also managed to position myself in the awards season. For now, there is a good chance that the Hollywood Academy will place it in the category of Best Visual Effects. But if it were up to Kevin Feige, there would also be nominations for director Destin Daniel Cretton, screenwriter Dave Callaham, production designer Sue Chan, and composer Joel P. West, among other members of the team.
“There are a lot of comic book fans who didn’t know who Shang-Chi was. And yet the work that Destin, Dave, Sue and Joel did created something new that connected with audiences. We recognized it, the audience recognized it and I am sure I would love for the hard work of all these people who tell their story to be recognized, “added the executive.
