Guillermo del Toro will rewrite script for In the Mountains of Madness

Among the everlasting and hitherto unsatisfied dreams of Guillermo del Toro, there are two cinematographic proposals: his own version of Frankenstein’s monster and, of course, an adaptation of the novel In the mountains of madness. In fact, in 2006 news arrived that the filmmaker from Guadalajara had co-written a script based on that lurid fiction by HP Lovecraft, in complicity with his frequent collaborator Matthew Robbins. And while fifteen years have passed without the project being able to stand up, del Toro has no plans to take his finger off the line.

The Oscar-winning director was a guest on the latest episode of the podcast The Kingcast and there he revealed what his next move will be in order to convert In the mountains of madness in a movie. To begin with, the filmmaker set out to give it a different narrative treatment to the adaptation he originally conceived. After all, he now has other priorities.

«What about Moutains is that the script that I co-wrote fifteen years ago is not the one that I would do now, so I need to rewrite it«, Commented Guillermo del Toro (via Collider). “Not just to reduce it in some way, but because at the time I was trying to bridge the scale of it. [película] and the elements that would make it go through the machinery of study ».

Years ago, the Mexican did not give his arm to twist before the great Hollywood distributors and, for the most part, that prevented his film proposal from receiving the green light. Initially, Warner Bros. Pictures was targeted to shelter In the mountains of madness of Guillermo del Toro, but that ship eventually wrecked because the company was not convinced of the high production costs and the unfortunate outcome that the director insisted on maintaining. Later, Universal Studios also declined its participation in the film – despite having Tom Cruise in the cast – because del Toro wanted an adaptation with an adult rating and not a 13-year-old.

Even so, it seems that the director did give in to various pressures from those studios in order to match his vision to the conventions of a blockbuster. However, “I don’t think I should reconcile that anymore,” he said in The Kingcast, and consequently, del Toro feels confident to give a different direction to the story he originally longed to tell.

“I can go to a much more esoteric, weirder and smaller version. You know, where I can go back to some of the scenes that were left out, “he said. «Some of the great set pieces that I designed, for example, do not make me hungry. I have already made [en otros proyectos] this or that set piece giant. Feel [con ganas de] go in a stranger direction.

And I add:

I know that some things will remain. I know that the outcome we have is one of the most intriguing, strange and disturbing to me. There are four set pieces horror that I love in the original script. So, you know, that would be my hope. I certainly get a phone call every six months of [el productor] Don Murphy saying, ‘Are we doing this or what? Are you doing this next or what? ‘And I say,’ I have to take the time to rewrite it. ‘

Still of The alley of lost souls
