Filming of the Sorcerer Supreme sequel ended long ago, being (apparently) an experience sui generis for its lead actor. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Benedict Cumberbatch noted that occasionally Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness he seemed to be “inventing as he went.” But it would not have been a negative thing, as it was the effect of the freedoms that director Sam Raimi enjoyed, as well as the pressing production methods of Marvel Studios.
To begin with, let’s remember that Scott derrickson was going to position himself again in the executive chair, after his work in Doctor Strange (2016). However, he resigned in January 2020 due to creative differences and went on to serve only as an executive producer on the sequel. According to The Hollywood ReporterMarvel Studios boss Kevin Feige personally advised Benedict Cumberbatch that Derrickson had chosen to give up the ship’s helm.
“It saddened me to hear it,” the actor told the outlet. But that was not my decision. I fully respected the studio’s decision and it was done in a very friendly manner. The ‘adults’ called me and talked to me. And that was it”.
In April of that same year, it was confirmed that Sam raimi would direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, this being his return to the superhero genre after commanding the trilogy Spider-man (2002-2007).
The interpreter of the Supreme Sorcerer recognizes that the participation of that filmmaker meant “a safe pair of hands” during the production of the film. In addition, being the same director of The devil’s awakening, allowed “certain features” of Raimi’s terrifying filmography to permeate the upcoming MCU film.
On the other hand, Benedict Cumberbatch emphasized that the sequel to Doctor Strange he was able to avoid some of the restrictions of the first film, where “you’re always stuck in a script, because it’s the origin story.” Consequently, it became inevitable that the shooting (“sometimes”) seemed to be subject to improvisation. What’s more, the actor suggests that the House of Ideas urged the start of production without being clear about the climax of the story.
“This time there was much more freedom. I guess because … we weren’t literally making it up on the fly but it feels like this sometimes«Said the Oscar nominee. “Marvel has this amazing ability to go into production: “We really have to start filming now, it doesn’t matter that the third act isn’t exactly where you want it to be.” Sometimes you really do things by dancing a tightrope«.
Are you excited to learn how much of Sam Raimi’s style underlies the multiverse of insanity? Beyond Cumberbatch’s recent remarks, his co-star Elizabeth Olsen spoke weeks ago about how that director’s presence sets the tone for the sequel. “It’s a very scary movie, it’s like ‘old’ Sam Raimi”, asserted the interpreter of Scarlet Witch. “They’re trying to create the scariest Marvel movie.”
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness It will hit theaters on March 25, 2022.
The filming entry for Doctor Strange 2 felt improvised: Benedict Cumberbatch was first published in Cinema PREMIERE.
