If you were one of those who went crazy when all the spider men appeared fighting together in Spider-Man: No Way Homethen this news is for you. Would you have liked to see Tobey Maguire in the MCU much earlier? Now we know that there was a real possibility that this could have happened.
In 2008, The incredible Hulk kicked off what we know today as the MCU. The hugely successful cinematic universe allowed Marvel’s most famous superheroes to debut on the big screen. It is currently one of the least recognized films by the public and critics, but for a time the possibility that the Spider-Man played by Tobey Maguire appeared in the film, at least with a cameo, was handled.
Obviously, it didn’t happen, but… Can you imagine what would have happened if he had seen him share the screen with the Hulk in 2008?
Louis Leterrier, director of The incredible Hulk, always had the arachnid in mind as part of his film. Spider-Man was, at the time, Marvel’s flagship superhero and was coming off a very successful trilogy directed by Sam Raimi. Attaching him to the then fledgling MCU was one way to ensure success.
Why didn’t we get to see Tobey Maguire in the MCU?
During a interview for MTVNewsLeterrier explained that he was looking for Maguire’s appearance in a scene at the end of the film. Said scene took place inside Columbia University, and in it, Bruce Banner would meet Samuel Sterns. As the rights to the character were already held by Sony, the merger between franchises could not materialize.
Leterrier kept trying for the cameo, even without Maguire’s physical presence. After Sony’s first refusal, they thought of including the University empire state that we saw in the Raimi trilogy. Unfortunately, the result was the same: a resounding no.
Other attempts to combine the two franchises included references to Doctor Octopus in Hombre de Hierro (even without the presence of Alfred Molina, you know, so as not to upset Sony) and the presence of the Oscorp Tower of The amazing Spiderman in The Avengers. None of them were possible.
Fortunately, 13 years after the Hulk’s first appearance in the MCU, the dreams of many came true when we finally got to see Tobey Maguire back in the suit that made him famous. Recently, many rumors and fan theories suggest that the actor could even appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessbut only time will tell if his participation was a farewell wink or the start of more arachnid adventures.
The entry Director of The Incredible Hulk wanted to include Tobey Maguire in the MCU was published first in Cinema PREMIERE.
