Italian authorities reported that Paul Haggis was arrested following allegations of sexual assault against him. The events occurred in the province of Ostuni, Italy, where a young tourist was forced by the director to have sexual relations for a period of two days.
Haggis would later have abandoned the woman at the airport, despite her precarious psychological and health conditions. Airport security quickly detected that something was wrong with her. She was referred to a hospital and to the proper authorities. These later arrested the filmmaker and released a statement explaining what happened.
Paul Haggis was in Italy to attend the Allora Fest that starts next Tuesday and where he would give master classes. Festival spokesmen reacted to the statements by completely suspending any involvement of the filmmaker with the event.
Haggis’ attorney, Priya Chaudhry, denied (via) completely the accusations. He argued that he cannot reveal the details or evidence of the case, since Italian law prohibits it. However, he assured the US media that his client “is completely innocent and is willing to cooperate fully with the authorities so that the truth comes to light quickly.”
This is not the first time that Paul Haggis has been accused of sexual assault. Already in 2018 there were four women who accused him of various attacks. Including of course the sexual ones. At that time, the defendant denied everything and even countersued for extortion the main point of the case, Haleigh Breest.
Haggis won two Oscars in 2005 when his film Crash It won the awards for Best Picture and Original Screenplay. He later designed the libretti for million dollar Baby, Flags of our Fathers Y Letters From Iwo Jima for filmmaker Clint Eastwood. He is also responsible for the scripts for two James Bond movies: Royal Casino Y Quantum of Solace.
The entry Director and screenwriter Paul Haggis arrested in Italy for sexual assault was first published in Cine PREMIERE.
