Chris Rock gets a standing ovation after altercation with Will Smith

Chris Rock returned to the stage after the Oscars and his audience received him with a standing ovation. The audience stood for just over two minutes as they gave him applause. Of course, the comedian could not help but be overwhelmed by that and comment briefly on that incident that he starred in with Will Smith at the last award ceremony.

In case you have lived in a cave and did not know what happened, here is a bit of context. Last Sunday during the 74th Academy Awards ceremony, attention turned to a controversial episode instead of the award-winning films.

Chris Rock took the microphone to present the award for Best Documentary, but not before throwing a few jokes. In particular, one of them was directed towards Jada Pinkett Smith and in this one, her lack of hair was referenced. The actress has already commented in the past that she suffers from alopecia, a condition that causes her hair to fall out. Her husband Will Smith did not take the joke well and went on stage to slap the host. Moments later he returned to his seat and from there he yelled at Rock to “keep his wife’s name out of her fucking mouth.”

After that episode, nothing was ever the same again in the industry. The media have turned to analyze the incident and ask for the opinion of all those close to him and even some others who have nothing to do with it. Despite the analysis and the many debates, however, the two protagonists of the embarrassing moment have said or commented little until now.

Will Smith posted a written apology via Instagram. And now the comedian speak briefly of it during the first performance of his Ego Death World Tour which was held at a Boston venue. Chris Rock walked out on stage to a several-minute standing ovation and acknowledged that he was overwhelmed. He then proceeded to joke around asking everyone how their weekend was.

“I don’t have a ton of stuff about what happened, so if you heard that, I have a whole show that I wrote before this weekend, and I’m still processing what happened,” Rock said. “So at some point I’ll talk about that shit. And it will be serious and fun.”

Chris later acknowledged that aside from some “weird shit” lately, he’s generally in a pretty good spot in his life. His Show It lasted about an hour and jokes about what happened at the Oscars there was not much. However, she promised that in the future he will talk about it in greater depth and surely with good humor.

While the slap episode was embarrassing, it came perhaps at a good time for Rock. The comedian was about to start his first tour of stand-up in five years and since the incident, ticket sales for his performances have skyrocketed. The ticket office reported that more tickets were sold in one night than in the entire presale month combined.

Rock will be presented in 38 venues in the United States and will also carry the Show to Australia, England and New Zealand. Perhaps it is time that the comedian has to add new dates and presentations not only for US territory, but in other countries not covered. The above is proof that bad publicity does not exist.

The entry Chris Rock receives a standing ovation after altercation with Will Smith was first published in Cinema PREMIERE.
