On November 4, 2001, the film that introduced the Magic World to a wave of countless fans had its world premiere. This “The Boy Who Survived” film, based on the inaugural book in the JK Rowling literary series, was directed by Chris Columbus, who apparently still has unfinished business with the franchise. This week, a statement by the filmmaker was released in which he expresses his desire to direct a film adaptation of the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Would you be in favor of this idea?
Five years after the last movie of Harry Potter, a staging that expanded the history of the original tapes and books came to theaters. It carried by title Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and boasted a Jack Thorne libretto (His Dark Materials), based on an argument conceived by Rowling herself. It is set 19 years after the events of The deathly hallows, at a time when Potter serves as director of the Minister for Magic, while his son Albus Severus lives his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Since its premiere at London’s Palace Theater, much has been debated as to whether the play deserves a film adaptation. While it received critical acclaim and accolades – the Broadway version triumphed at the 2018 Tony Awards – fans were certainly less satisfied. There were those who even did not know Harry Potter and the Cursed Child within the canon.
However, director Chris Columbus – responsible for the first two films in the series Harry Potter– does not share the opinion of the detractors. In an interview with Variety, the BAFTA winner revealed that he would be interested in bringing the play to the big screen. And he also suggested that he could do it with the same cast of the previous feature films.
«I would love to direct The Cursed Child. It’s a great play and the children [actores] They are currently the correct age to play those roles. It’s a little fantasy of mine, “Columbus told the outlet.
Being fair, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert grint (although in his thirties) he is still slightly behind the 36-37 years of age that his respective characters are in the play. But that does not matter when the most obvious and profitable option is that, if there is a film project, Warner Bros. Pictures resort to that famous triad of histrions. Although we do not forget that in the staging of The Cursed Child, Hermione Granger has been played by different actresses of color.
On the other hand, Chris Columbus told Variety that he is in constant communication with Radcliffe and Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), so they would probably be the first to know if a movie from The Cursed Child whether or not it is in the oven. The truth is that the experience on the film set would be very different from what it was for Columbus twenty years ago, with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
«In the first film, there was not much professional experience between the three protagonists. That is why that film was full of so many cuts, “said the filmmaker. “For the first three months, I was only really able to shoot a close-up of one of the actors before they lost concentration.”
And I add:
“The first two weeks, all the children were so excited to be a part of the movie of Harry Potter they were basically smiling for the cameras. I couldn’t make them stop smiling. It really became an exercise and an acting class for me as a director.
The entry Chris Columbus Wants to Direct a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie was first published on Cinema PREMIERE.
