Chloé Zhao talks about gay superhero and sex scene in Eternals

In early 2020, it was confirmed that Eternals would feature the first openly gay superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We have since known that it would be the inventive Phastos – one of the “Eternals” that Brian Tyree Henry plays in the film – who would become a member of the LGBT community. In addition, it was said that she would have a husband and a young son.

To date, a blockbuster introducing non-heterosexual (or non-cisgender) characters is somewhat risky. After all, there are markets where censorship continues to be exercised without any consideration. However, director Chloé Zhao says she hopes her feature film will not require modifications to avoid potential controversy.

In a recent interview with IndieWire, the Chinese filmmaker expressed “fingers crossed” so that there is no need to cut out gay moments from Eternals. “I don’t know all the details, but I think there were discussions and there is a great desire on the part of Marvel and me – we talked about this – not to change the cut of the filmChloé Zhao commented.

She also stressed that making Phastos the MCU’s first homosexual superhero was an aspect of the plot that had already existed before she assumed the director’s chair. In this regard, Zhao also anticipated that it is the character’s relationship with her husband and his offspring that defines her motivation throughout the story. And he specified how important it was to show this homoparental family in a situation that felt “authentic and real.”

“Obviously, [Phastos] lost faith in us [los humanos] For some very bad things we’ve done Then she had to stop looking at us as a whole and look at a person she falls in love with, and a child, to regain the face of humanity “, commented the director. “It is as if we turn on the news and we think it is completely useless. [Pero] then we go home, we look at our lover and our son and say, ‘Well, this is actually worth fighting for.’

Another novelty of Eternals is to include the first sex scene of the entire franchise. The details of this sequence have not been widely disseminated (for example, it is unknown which characters are involved in it). However, there were allusions by journalists who had the opportunity to see the film during its premiere in Los Angeles.

During his chat with IndieWireChloé Zhao acknowledged that “there was a lot of discussion” around how to solve that scene. On the other hand, he asserted that it was a completely “natural” maneuver for the House of Ideas.

«I think that the desire to do something different is a very natural desire [si consideramos] where Marvel Studios is located right now. I think it’s like Westerns entering the revisionist period of the seventies. I think it’s happening to superhero movies, or at least we’re on the brink of it. And then these scenes started to happen naturally, ”shared the Oscar winner.

And I add:

«That we can show two people who love each other – not only emotionally and intellectually but also physically – and have a sex scene that will be seen by many people and that shows their love, compassion and gentleness, I think it is a really beautiful thing ».

Eternals It will hit Mexican theaters on November 4.

The entry Chloé Zhao talks about gay superhero and sex scene in Eternals was first published in Cinema PREMIERE.
