Chloé Zhao speaks out for the first time about the bad reviews towards Eternals

After nearly a decade of critical consensus toward Marvel movies, Eternals by Chloé Zhao was the first to receive a large handful of bad reviews. The division between what the public thought about the film, against what specialized reviewers had to say was great. However, this type of gap is not something that greatly worries the filmmaker of Nomaldland. Conversely observe all this with love and as one more learning within his artistic career.

“I think the need for consensus is an obstacle to any authentic creative process, just as it is to living an authentic life as a person,” Zhao said. “I have been on the receiving end of some consensus and division about my work. None of them have a real influence on me as an artist, because every time I’m lucky enough to create, I learn from the process. Of what I have succeeded, and what I have failed. But that learning process is a very intimate affair. Anything beyond that, to me, is just part of the ecosystem that exists because of the nature of the industry we’re in.”

Eternals of Marvel was the first film with the character of block buster that the filmmaker made. It was a film that also arrived too late compared to its original release date. The pandemic forced studios to move their film releases, in relation to theaters closed due to sanitary restrictions. And later due to low attendance for fear of contagion.

Zhao noted that the film landed in the hearts of audiences at a time of crisis. A crisis that affected the industries and the functioning of the world. But that also wreaked havoc on emotional levels.

“It was planned to launch Eternals shortly after end gameAnd not at a time when everyone is having an existential crisis.” “The film itself is about existential crisis, both for humanity and for God. So I think we definitely felt like it was coming.”

Despite the complications Eternals it was not entirely a failure. The film grossed just over $400 million at the North American box office. And upon its arrival on Disney Plus, the work gained momentum in all those who preferred not to attend theaters, but who undoubtedly enjoyed the adventures of this new group of superheroes from home.

For proof, there is the percentage that the film has on Rotten Tomatoes, a reference site for cinephile measurements that observes approval averages. There the taste of the public qualified it with 78% acceptance, as opposed to 47% assigned by specialized critics.

Chloé Zhao said to understand this division by Eternals between critics and fans. He compared the world of block buster that Marvel comes from and the independent film world that she comes from. She said both worlds have been divided to extreme levels of forced opposition between each other’s supporters and her film made audiences on both sides uncomfortable, when it fell somewhere in the middle due to “our shared interests”.

“It’s not about us, it’s about them. And I say that with love, because they have a comfort level [con] how your entertainment works and your world, your beloved Marvel or your beloved independent filmmaker,” Zhao explained. “That is the logical order of your world that is being disturbed. So I appreciate the passion of him, to try to make sense of it.”

In a way, Eternals yes it was an uncomfortable film from many angles. It was a block buster attached to the great gear of Marvel. But conceived under the gaze of independent cinema. Its lack of explosive action, its themes of questioning figures like God, its addition of homosexual characters, and even a sex scene unheard of in this type of family film, earned it various comments.

Now the film can be seen from the Disney Plus platform, while the director is already preparing to set her sights on the vampire myth of Dracula.

Chloé Zhao’s entry speaks for the first time about the bad reviews towards Eternals was first published in Cinema PREMIERE.
