All the film festivals in Mexico that you can enjoy until the end of the year

According to the data recorded by The Statistical Yearbook of Mexican Cinema 2020, in our country there are a total of 161 film festivals and events. Due to the negative implications of the pandemic, 57 of those festivals and events failed to take place. However, several more have remained afloat through a hybrid model (face-to-face; virtual) that, to this day, continues to be used to celebrate national and international cinema. In this context, we present a guide with all the film festivals in Mexico that you can enjoy until the end of the year.

Shorts Mexico – International Short Film Festival of Mexico

DATE: September 1 to 30, 2021.

The International Short Film Festival of Mexico celebrates its sixteenth edition in Mexico City and in the Mexican Republic through virtual and physical venues. The official selection is made up of 600 films from 54 countries: 428 Mexican short films, 45 Latin American, 127 international.

Currently the programming can be enjoyed at the National Cinematheque, Cinemex 222 and through Channel 22 (main headquarters on TV), Channel 11, TV UNAM, TV Mexiquense, La Octava and on the platforms Shorts Mexico / Wahu, FilminLatino, UNAM film library, Rediberofest Festhome and Facebook Shorts Mexico.

Pixelatl Festival

DATE: September 7-11, 2021.

Pixelatl celebrates 10 years of being one of the most outstanding animation festivals in our country. This year, the organizers decided to concentrate all their programming in one edition on-line. As usual there is a long list of guests, screenings, conferences, workshops and much more.

Guanajuato International Film Festival

DATE: September 17-27, 2021.

The twenty-fourth edition of GIFF 2021 is about to start in a on-line and in person. Next, the dates and venues that you must take into account to enjoy your Official Selection.

  • September 18 to 20 in León: Guanajuato Cultural Forum, Bicentennial Theater, Study Theater, Plaza de Gallos and Cinemex Plaza Mayor.
  • September 21-23 in San Miguel de Allende: they return to the Main Garden, screenings at the Ignacio Ramírez “El Nigromante” Cultural Center, and at Cinemex Plaza Luciérnaga. In addition, the University Rally will be held in this city, where six teams from different universities in the country will record a short film in 48 hours.
  • September 24 to 26 in Irapuato: City Theater, Outdoor Cinema Picnic and screenings at Cinemex Plaza Jacarandas.
  • Online broadcasts from September 17 to 26: from the digital platform www.giff.mx/online, as well as panels, workshops and conferences that will be broadcast on the festival’s social networks.

Guadalajara International Film Festival

DATE: October 1 to 9, 2021.

The thirty-sixth edition of FICG 2021 is about to start in a on-line and in person. For this edition the guest of honor will be Guatemala. There are still details to be revealed, but you can already know the film titles that will be in Maguey Award Official Competition and those selected who will be in Ibero-American Short Film Official Competition.

DOCS MX – Mexico City International Documentary Film Festival

DATE: October 14-24, 2021.

The Mexico City International Documentary Film Festival will celebrate its sixteenth edition in Mexico City to celebrate non-fiction cinema: documentary, also in hybrid format. The festival has been characterized by promoting the creativity of audiovisual producers through different calls like Doctubre MX or Reto Docs.

Morelia International Film Festival

DATE: October 27 to November 1, 2021

The nineteenth edition of FICM 2021 is about to start in a on-line and face-to-face (Morelia, Michoacán and through Cinépolis Klic, Channel 22 and FilminLatino). Over the months, the festival organizers have revealed their poster, official image, the cinespot and, recently, the Official Selection, made up of 100 films: 13 works in the Michoacan Section (10 short films and 3 feature films), 66 titles in the Mexican Short Film Section (17 for animation, 18 for documentary and 31 for fiction), 11 titles in the Mexican Documentary Section and 10 titles in the Mexican Feature Film Section.

Among the most prominent titles we find Mixtec knotby Ángeles Cruz; The other tom, by Rodrigo Plá and Laura Santullo, The way of the Sunby Claudia Sainte-Luce and A cop movie, by Alonso Ruizpalacios, which won the Silver Bear for artistic contribution to the edition of the Mexican Yibran Asuad at the Berlinale 2021.

Los Cabos International Film Festival

DATE: November 10 to 17, 2021.

The festival will be 10 years old. Currently there are not many details of its tenth edition; however, their 2021 calls to shape your Official Selection. Of course, we already have a first look at his official image curated by designer David Rodrigo Pineda Ortiz.

Zanate Festival

DATE: November 21-27, 2021.
